The Northern Ireland aquaculture sector produces around 4,000 tonnes of fish and shellfish annually, valued at over £12 million.
This is comprised of 1,400 tonnes of oysters worth £3.6million, 1,300 tonnes of mussels worth £1million and 1,100 tonnes of finfish worth £7.3million.
Aquaculture also makes an important contribution to coastal and rural communities in the region, employing over 140 people.
Aquaculture production in Northern Ireland has a low carbon footprint and thanks to rigorous controls on imports and enforcement, is unique in having a disease-free status that supports global exports of fish as well as finished products.
The quality of Northern Irish farmed fish and shellfish is recognised in domestic and international markets as second to none.
The Northern Ireland Aquaculture Representative Group (ARG) represents all Northern Ireland’s aquaculture producers.
ARG provides a cross-sector voice for the aquaculture sector in Northern Ireland. It enables collaboration and engagement with Northern Ireland’s government agencies, research & innovation networks and other stakeholders relevant to Northern Ireland aquaculture.
ARG supports the sustainable development of Northern Ireland’s aquaculture sector: increasing the socio-economic benefits it provides, while maintaining and enhancing Northern Ireland’s aquatic environment.
We thank Seafish and the Fishmongers’ Company for their continued support to ARG and the Northern Ireland aquaculture sector.
